High Phenolic EVOO goes to Yale

We are very pleased to see our efforts over the last 7 years to research and expand the production of the ancient Hellenic “medicinal” quality of EVOO. This is the olive oil that fed the greatest leap in human consciousness and created the basis of our western and a great deal of the eastern civilization. In every aspect of our culture; medicine, arts, astronomy, mathematics, physics, athletic training, language, theater, dance, music chemistry, space travel, robotics, just to name a few areas their consciousness founded or developed.
High Phenolic – a brief modern history
High Phenolic EVOO was officially born in 2012. This is when the EU 432/2012 health labeling regulation for Phenolic compounds in EVOO was approved.
After years of research and human trials across borders in the EU Phenolic compounds were proven to have a positive effect in reducing blood platelet oxidative stress. This is as close as you are going to get to a medicinal natural food designation.
Food during the last 100 years has been grown and processed to the point it contains less and less nutritional value. Instead of using our resources and intelligence to increase the nutritional value in food we create novel over processed soft drinks with added “vitamins and micro nutrients to solve the problem”. These money making solutions are killing us killing the environment changing the climate poisoning our rivers lakes and oceans.
The Olive tree to the rescue
Nicolas is an environmental engineer, specializing in permaculture dry farming methods with olives as the main crop. He manages the Atsas Organic farm located in Cyprus in the middle of the UN buffer zone between southern Cyprus and the northern Turkish occupied territory. It is more than a labor of love; this is an organically certified farm with the vision to transition into an agro ecology integrated system and a demonstration site.

Research to the rescue
Medical research in both clinical and human trials is showing the potential for high phenolic olive oil, particularly those rich in oleocanthal, to have preventive and/or therapeutic affects on such chronic illnesses as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, rheumatoid arthritis, Type II diabetes and many cancers. Indeed, in 2012 the EU instituted a health labelling regulation that stated any extra virgin olive oil with polyphenols of 250mg/kg could put a health claim on its label.

A new era for EVOO
The olive oils that are coming out of this new initiative inspired in Greece are measuring far higher levels than this. In recognition of the growing interest for this premium health-protective olive oil, the EU funded the ARISTOIL Interreg MED Program, which is a 3-year, 5-country study into the production and marketing of this extraordinary extra virgin olive oil.
Nevertheless research has accelerated into the role of Phenolic compounds in human health as a preventative and research continues on the potential for polyphenol rich EVOO to alleviate symptoms and even potentially to cure a number of diseases.

Organized by Associated Research Scientist in Biostatistics, and Vassilis Vassiliou (Department Chair and Susan Dwight Bliss, Professor of Epidemiology, Environmental Health Sciences and of Ophthalmology and Visual Science) envision a research and development center with an expanded collaboration of researchers and entrepreneurs to enhance clinical outcomes. The Strakka Estate was founded during the period of Venetian rule in Cyprus, some five hundred years ago, and appears on Abraham Ortelius’s map of 1573. The Estate has had a continuous history of olive oil production since.
Situated near the medieval walled city of Nicosia, with views of the Troodos and Kyrenia mountain ranges, the Estate was acquired by its current owners, the Leventis family, in 1942. It covers around 50 hectares (124 acres) of land, with 8,200 olive trees and over 2,000 citrus trees.
The Strakka Estate’s production of olives and citrus fruit is entirely organic and is certified by the Lacon Institute.
