This year we celebrate a decade of the most exciting project I have ever been involved in: olive oil. I literally stumbled upon High Phenolic EVOO as I was preparing for early retirement in 2011. It ignited a passion and gave me a purpose to keep working.

This was not work it was absolute joy at being at the forefront of olive oil research activity that would eventually lead me back to my early youth in my mothers village in northern Greece. 

That is where I first had the good fortune to be introduced to this type of early harvest EVOO. This was our medicine back then. I am talking about the late 50s early 60s.

Headaches, toothaches, cuts, bruises, sore throats, burns, they were all treated with this “medicinal” EVOO which was passed between relatives and friends. It was never paid for. It was given as a gift it was not commercially available. You had to know an olive grower. In Greece with so many small olive groves dotting the country side, meant it was available. In the history of olive oil it is always referred as “medicinal” or “medicine.” This was its most important function. After 5,000 years we are finally beginning to find out why. Clinical trials have confirmed the health benefits of EVOO are derived from the phenolic compounds it contains and not the mono unsaturated fat. In fact the combination of phenolic compounds with mono unsaturated fat increases the health benefits.
