Aristoleo Certified™

High Phenolic Extra Virgin Olive Oil (HP-EVOO) Certification Protocol

Our Purpose

Aristoleo Certified™ exists to identify and recognize producers who meet a clearly defined standard of excellence in High Phenolic Extra Virgin Olive Oil (HP-EVOO).

Certification is built on three non-negotiable pillars of transparency:

1. Verified phenolic measurement — Quantified by NMR or LC-MS/MS analysis in alignment with the ARISTOIL research framework.

2. Independent organoleptic defect analysis — Confirmation of Extra Virgin classification through accredited sensory panels.

3. Documented temperature-controlled supply chain management — Evidence of preservation from harvest to consumer.

Together, these criteria ensure that certified oils meet both sensory excellence and measurable bioactive integrity.

Scientific Foundation

In 2012, following submission by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the European Commission enacted Regulation 432/2012 recognizing that olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress.

The regulation specifies that olive oil must contain at least 250 mg/kg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives per 20 g daily intake to bear the health claim.

What is often misunderstood is that these compounds are present not as simple “polyphenols” in the wine sense, but primarily as bioactive derivatives formed during malaxation — commonly referred to as active polar phenols.

Aristoleo Certified™ recognizes oils that respect this scientific threshold and the integrity required to preserve it.

The Four-Tier Certification Structure

Our certification framework builds trust progressively.

Tier I — Verified Phenolic & Sensory Integrity

Laboratory-verified phenolic concentration
Confirmed Extra Virgin classification
Defect-free organoleptic analysis

Tier II — Preservation Protocol

Temperature-controlled storage
Protected transport
Light-shielded packaging
Traceable lot management

Tier III — Agricultural & Production Transparency

Variety disclosure
Harvest timing documentation
Milling methodology
Sustainability practices
Quality control systems

Tier IV — Market Transparency

Direct producer contact information
Verified retail partners
Consumer education support

Each tier builds upon the previous. Certification reflects demonstrated commitment — not marketing claims.

Origin & Ethos

Aristoleo Awards were founded in 2016 during the Oleocanthal International Society Conference at the International Olympic Academy in Ancient Olympia — a symbolic location honoring the cultural and medicinal heritage of olive oil.

Aristoleo Certified™ extends that founding principle:

HP-EVOO stands at the intersection of gastronomy and measurable health science.

Our mission is not to inflate claims — but to protect standards.

About Aristoleo

Aristoleo is dedicated to advancing scientific literacy, transparency, and integrity within the High Phenolic EVOO sector.

Through research alignment, certification protocols, and educational initiatives, Aristoleo works to ensure that when olive oil is described as high phenolic, the claim is measurable, defensible, and preserved.
