The Aristoleo® Test Kit is widely known as a “lab in a vial”. It is a prize-winning invention of the year (2015 Greece Innovates) that measures the health promoting phenolic compounds oleocanthal (anti-inflammatory) and oleacein (antioxidant), the most widely researched phenols in olive oil.
Employing a colour chart, this innovative “lab in a vial” is calibrated by NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) to be a quick and inexpensive way for olive oil producers to analyze their batches of EVOO.
Aristoleo puts the power of the NMR in a handheld “lab in a vial” in the hands of those that need it the most. Now, the olive growers can better assess the value of their EVOO based on whether it qualifies for the EU health labelling regulation 432-2012.
This regulation states that olive oils with polyphenol content greater than 250 mg/kg can put a health claim on its label:
“Olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress”
“The claim may be used only for olive oil which contains at least 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives (e.g. oleuropein complex and tyrosol) per 20 g of olive oil. In order to bear the claim information shall be given to the consumer that the beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 20 g of olive oil.”
Therefore: the higher the polyphenol levels the higher the price of the EVOO.
Producers can now gather those olive oils that test high in oleocanthal and oleacein. High phenolic olive oil is then marketed for its preventive and therapeutic properties and priced accordingly. This in turn ensures the consumer of the quality of the oil they are buying.
High phenolic olive oil, particularly those rich in oleocanthal and oleacein are being actively researched for their potential preventive and therapeutic properties in cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurodegenerative illnesses such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and autoimmune disease like rheumatoid arthritis and Type II diabetes.
Oleocanthal, in particular, is being shown to have significant anti-inflammatory action providing a natural and gentle way to reduce inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation is generally regarded as the underlying cause of most illness.
