A Divided Island Nation Unites the World
Cyprus is a divided island nation whose northern part has been occupied by Turkey since 1974.
While the north is shunned by the world community of nations as a rogue illegitimate state and Turkey as an occupyng power, the resourceful Greek Cypriots to the south are unwilling to give up hope, their land and ancient heritage.
Today southern Cyprus offers a united vision of regenerative agriculture that is setting new standards of quality for olives and olive oil.
Their success is visible wherever you go in the South. From the beaches of Paphos and Agia Napa, the Troodos mountains, to the well kept villages and the modern metropolis of Lemessos, Greek Cypriots are thriving.
For the last 3 years a new success story has been quietly unfolding and making its mark in the world of olive oil. Atsas Organic Farm owned by George David and managed by Nicolas Nétien have created a new vision for the future of the olive groves in the region. With water in short supply they have turned their attention to regenerative agriculture practices to increase the nutrient value of olive oil and olives. Dry farming and water harvesting in accord with local resources are maximized. The soil is fed and nourished by a variety of micro organisms and the bio diversity of the land use is strengthening the root systems of the olive trees. Atsas produces the highest phenolic extra virgin olive oil in the world and Strakka produces table olives with some of the highest concentration of phenolic compounds.
Food as medicine agrotourism is the new destination of choice for health conscious and environmentally sensitive tourists and visitors to Cyprus.
This is their story.
