A lighthouse doesn’t know your cargo. It doesn’t know your destination. It has no opinion about where you’re headed or why. It has exactly one job — refuse to let the light go dark — and then it gets out of your way entirely.

Why am I reaching for this analogy? Because that is the whole of what Aristoleo does. We don’t guide. We measure, and we hold the number steady. Our certification is to shine a light, not govern and not discipline, nor is it to debate what constitutes high phenolic olive oil.

There is no debate. The science speaks and research continues to illuminate its properties.

We don’t tell producers what cultivation or measuring methods to choose. Whether to produce an exceptional culinary product or adjust methods to produce the quality of oil defined by the EU Health Claim 432/2012.

We do invite those producers who already hold our standard to stand with us, so we can share them with a discerning public looking for a trustworthy source to add to their health regimen. High phenolic olive oil, sometimes incorrectly referred to as high polyphenol olive oil, is a functional food that supports health in multiple ways; as a preventive, an immunity booster, or as a beneficial adjunct to traditional therapies.

Here’s why that distinction matters right now, more than it used to.

High phenolic olive oil has moved, in a few years, from a niche most people had never heard of to a category with real momentum — and momentum brings company. New labs, new methods, new institutions, all with a stake in being the one whose number counts.

We endorse the two analytic methods verified and accepted for the EU health claim: qNMR and LC-MS/MS. Their equivalence was established by the ARISTOIL Interreg MED study on health benefits and best practices for producing olive oil that meets the health claim standard — a legitimate, cross-verified basis most alternative methods can’t claim.*

A growing number of culinary competitions are now adding a health category of their own. The caveat is this: which method of measurement are they actually using to discern the beneficial properties? A health claim sticker backed by an unsubstantiated analytic number isn’t a certification. It’s a guess.

There’s a further gap worth naming. A competition award is typically based on a single submitted sample — not an ongoing verification of what’s actually filling bottles months later. In an arena as demanding as high phenolic oil, that gap matters more than it does for taste awards, because the properties that earned the award are also the ones most likely to have degraded — or been diluted — by the time a customer buys it.

A brand that oversells its own harvest and quietly buys in bulk oil to meet demand can still carry last year’s award on this year’s label. Short of testing every batch, there’s no way for a buyer to know the difference — which is exactly why ongoing certification, not a one-time award, is the only real answer to the question.

We’ve watched this unfold since 2012, and most of it is a professional argument that has almost nothing to do with the person standing in a kitchen trying to decide whether the bottle in front of them is what it claims to be.

Some of the confusion runs even deeper than that. A great deal of what’s sold under this banner is still, at heart, a culinary oil — chosen for flavor, for a gold medal at a taste competition, for the story on the label — dressed up in the language of health because that language sells.

Taste and phenolic content are not the same measurement, and a bottle can earn one honestly while having nothing to do with the other. The EU set a threshold — 250 mg/kg combined hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol derivatives — specifically because below it, a health claim isn’t defensible. That’s not a marketing number. It’s a line the science drew. What we certify is oil that clears it, verified, not asserted.

Our certification includes two other aspects that have become more evident over the years of our research and testing, and that is cool storage all along the supply chain to the buyer and organoleptic analysis, not for harmonies, but strictly for defects, which I’ll explain in a moment.

Buyers that research online before choosing a product, especially one as important as health care, are left to chart their own course through waters that keep shifting — not because the science is genuinely unsettled, but because there’s money in making it look unsettled, on both fronts at once.

This isn’t abstract for us. It got personal really quick and solidified our objectives and hard line in the sand. Athan has spent eight years managing an aggressive metastatic prostate cancer, with daily high phenolic oil as part of a protocol he built alongside his medical team. One time, when a very high phenolic olive oil he was taking tasted off, he tested it at an independent lab. Unfit for human consumption.

I want to make this point really clear. While high phenolic olive oil is a healthy functional food, it can at the same time be rancid. How it is treated and stored means the difference between what heals and what harms.

What the buyer needs to know is active biophenols degrade — sometimes quickly from four directions; heat, oxygen, light, and time. Long before a bottle smells or looks wrong to anyone not in the know. Athan has learned, the hard way, to taste the difference between an oil that still has its bite and one that’s already lost it, no matter what the label says. That’s not a metaphor or a marketing gimmick as some have implied, It’s eight years of paying close attention because something real was riding on the answer.

Aristoleo Certification is not a government regulatory body. It carries no legal authority and issues no guarantee. It is merely a light shining on the facts so that buyers can choose with confidence.

Aristoleo Certification criteria are threefold and simple. The certification is free through the entry in the Aristoleo Awards, which establishes phenolic content and organoleptic purity. So when we say we don’t guide, we mean it plainly: we’re not telling anyone what to do with their health, their protocol, or their choices. We’re merely refusing to let the light of truth go dark while everyone else argues about whose truth it should be — and we’re glad for the company of every producer willing to stand in that same light.
