Science is Raising the Prices of Greek

High Phenolic Olive Oils

Prices have jumped from €2.50 per kg to €155.00 per 250ml

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 11, 2021

Aristoleo has been at the forefront of implementing the EU health claim for polyphenols in olive oil EU 432/2012. This new category of olive oil requires a more scientific approach to judging the quality of olive oil.

The connection between the concentration of polyphenols and health benefits was firmly established in 2012 when the EU health claim EU 432/2012 for polyphenols in olive oil was approved.

From the inaugural event in 2016 at the Olympic Academy at the ancient city of Olympia it was clear Aristoleo Awards were intent on disrupting the olive oil industry’s race to lower quality and lower prices in order to compete with seed soils. Health benefits could now be measured scientifically.

Science came to the rescue of the Greek olive oil industry which seemed content selling their best early harvest olive oil to the Italians in bulk for as low as €2.50 per kg.

Greek producers are now selling their early harvest high phenolic olive oils not in kilograms

but in milliliters, at the highest prices in the world.

As high as €155 for 250ml.

Aristoleo Awards were founded by Athan Gadanidis and Marilyn Harding. Athan arrived with Marilyn in 2012 after a 48-year absence for a month long vacation. He was also doing some research on the health benefits of olive oil for a book he was writing. That is how he discovered the research of scientists Dr. Eleni Melliou and Dr. Prokopios Magiatis at the University of Athens.

“I had no intention of living in Greece. I was looking to move to Italy to finish writing my book. I was just beginning to research the nutritional regimen of the ancient Olympians. I wanted to examine ancient texts brought by Greeks in 1400s as they fled Constantinople as the Ottoman empire gained territory. They brought their gold and their ancient books to Florence.” Athan explained.

But before he left Greece his fate was sealed. He was introduced to the newest way to measure the polyphenols found in early harvest olive oil, which Hippocrates called medicinal. “When I discovered that Dr. Prokopios Magiatis, Dr. Eleni Melliou and their team of researchers had developed an accurate method of measuring the phenolic compounds in olive oil my Hellenic spirit took flight. I decided to stay and help promote this new “medicinal” quality olive oil.”

The qNMR (quantitative Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) method revealed why early harvest olive oil made from unripened green olives was described as medicinal in ancient texts such as: Medica Materia written by Dioscourides in 50AD. Olive oil made for green olives contained massive amounts of oleocanthal and oleacein. Oleocanthal is a powerful anti-inflammatory and would explain why the ancient Hellenic doctors like Hippocrates and Dioscourides used it to fight inflammation.

The ancient Hellenes marketed their olive oil based on the Olympians achievements and its medical uses and set out to travel to distant lands, plant olive trees and set up trading posts. They grew and prospered.

When Athan returned in 2012, Greece was in an economic downward death spiral. This was the perfect moment to bring this discovery to the rest of the world, benefit the economy and regain Greek olive oil marketing prowess on a global scale. Finally, there was scientific proof why the Greek olive varieties are superior: it is due to the high concentrations of health protective phenolic compounds.

Santorini 2012

“The book I was writing was about my personal 40-year Odyssey in search of the Ancient Hellenic consciousness. It was tentatively titled: Three Recipes for the Revival of the Hellenic Spirit; Physical, Intellectual and Nutritional. Nutrition was the final chapter.”

Athan in his moment of patriotic zeal, had unknowingly stepped into the modern tragedy of the Greek olive oil industry. Most of the best quality early harvest olive oil was immediately sold to Italians and Spanish at rock bottom prices of less than €3 per kg. The simple fact they were buying it in kilograms infuriated Athan. “Nobody sells olive oil by the kilogram. Why are the Greeks doing that?” He would ask over and over again.

The Italian and Spanish olive oil companies and local Greek representatives were not only buying it at rock bottom prices they were also skimming 10% off the price by using kilograms instead of liters. One liter is 910 grams which means that a kilogram is 10% more than a liter.

What Athan witnessed, made him so outraged that there was no going back. He would either convince the olive growers, the industry leaders, and politicians to focus on this early harvest “medicinal” quality of olive oil, and stop selling it in kilograms at bulk prices … or die trying. Many Greeks warned him against rocking the boat. Others belittled him. But he knew this quality of olive oil linked to ancient Hellenic medicine could help revive the economy and the Hellenic spirit under attack from all sides stemming from the economic collapse.

Athan emailed George Lois, the legendary Greek ad man of Esquire fame and he wrote back eager to help the Greek cause. Around the same time, Marilyn contacted Arianna Huffington and was invited to write for HuffingtonPost.com about high phenolic olive oil and the adventure of forging this new path during the crisis. Athan engaged in lively conversations on the comments section of articles and got the attention of Curtis Cord, editor of OliveOilTimes.com. Athan was invited to submit articles on the economic and political situation of the Greek olive oil industry to oliveoiltimes.com.

Many olive growers were inspired by Dr. Magiatis and his discoveries. They persevered and have achieved wild success. Producers are now selling their high phenolic olive oils not in kilograms but in milliliters, some at the highest prices in the world – some as high as €155 for 250ml.

There is a wealth of anecdotal evidence and increasing number of clinical trials to suggest certain polyphenols in olive oil such as oleocanthal and oleacein may have significant therapeutic effect. Attention on Stroke & Heart attack prevention and chronic illnesses such as Alzheimer’s and leukemia are among the first human trials and most promising.

To protect this precious and distinct category, Aristoleo is introducing a certification protocol to ensure those seeking high phenolic olive oils actually receive the quality they rely on for their health objectives and the protection of their loved ones – young and elderly alike.

Aristoleo Data-Locked protocol is designed to eliminate any possibility of misrepresentation or deterioration due to sub optimal storage and transportation conditions. Aristoleo has created the first end-to-end solution for maintaining the quality of High Phenolic Olive Oil.

Independent research has shown the biggest threat to the phenolic compounds in olive oil after it is bottled is temperature. This is the weakest link in the supply and distribution chain.

In response, Aristoleo implemented the secure track and trace Data Locked Protocol including retail display coolers which keep the olive oil at the optimal temperature of 12.5°C – 15°C (55°F –  59°F –just like fine wine – to preserve the taste and phenolic integrity.

Aristoleo will be displaying these high phenolic olive oils in specially branded Aristoleo Coolers. Each batch of each brand will be tracked and traced from harvest to the branded display cooler and randomly tested 3 times, according to the EU funded ARISTOIL Interreg MED Program criteria. All results and certificates will be available online and at the moment of purchase via a QR code.

All olive oils will be analyzed by qNMR at the World Olive Center for Health, all data will be securely stored in three cloud databases and three offline devices. All data will be double and triple checked on a regular basis. Aristoleo will also certify retailers (online and brick and mortar) and restaurants to ensure Aristoleo certified olive oils are properly stored and handled.
